This module is to familiarise the student with the terminology used to describe the main components of the traditional single-CPU computer system.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the major types of a computer system and performance issues,
  2. Describe and explain the function of the hardware components of a typical personal computer,
  3. Assemble and test the components of a computer system,
  4. Install an operating system and applications software onto a computer,
  5. Describe the main features of a Local Area Network including access features and
  6. Distribute electronic mail and manage files over a local area network.
